 What Is It?

Most LED light therapy devices today use this type of low power LED.

LED light therapy is very popular today, especially for anti-aging and acne treatments.

LEDs were NASA’s choice for red light therapy when it brought the technique into space around the year 2000. They chose this technology for its low energy requirements, as well as its low heat emission and light weight.

Those same qualities made later research more accurate, and, to date, hundreds of studies from around the world have shown the benefits of red light therapy in the fields of anti-aging, healing, and pain relief.

Explaining the Colors and Numbers

Visible light has tiny wavelengths which range from 400 to 700 billionths of a meter. A billionth of a meter is called a nanometer, or nm.

White light contains all the colors of the rainbow, and a color can be defined by the range of these tiny wavelengths in nanometers (nm) like this:

However, calling it “radiation” makes it sound potentially dangerous and expensive, but “radiation” is just light energy and it’s not dangerous or expensive and is quite healing!

Blue Light

Skin penetration is a depth of 2-3mm with visible blue light. This is a branch of alternative medicine that uses natural blue or violet light for unwanted health issues including:

  1. Acne

  2. MRSA

  3. Depression & SAD

  4. Sleep Disorders

  5. Periodontal disease

  6. Neonatal jaundice

  7. Liver issues

3 Major benefits of blue light

  1. Kills bad bacteria.

  2. Helps regulate mood and circadian rhythms.

  3. Supports your liver.

Red Light

Skin Penetration is a depth of 8 to 10 mm with visible red light. Once absorbed, the light energy is converted to cellular energy, stimulating the body’s natural processes on a cellular level and kicking off a whole series of metabolic events to include:

  • Increased circulation and the formation of new capillaries.

  • Increased lymph system activity.

  • Increased production of collagen and fibroblasts.

  • Increased release of ATP also known as raw cellular energy.

  • Increased phagocytosis also known as cellular clean up.

  • Tissue granulation stimulated also known as part of wound healing.

  •  Inflammation reduced.

8 Major Benefits of red light

  1. Acne.

  2. Anti-aging.

  3. Cold sores and herpes.

  4. Eczema.

  5. Everyday cuts, scrapes burns & bruises.

  6. Hair loss & regrowth.

  7. Psoriasis.

  8. Rosacea.

What is Near Infrared Light (NIR) Therapy?

The benefits of near infrared light therapy can be delivered to the whole body through a near infrared light therapy device.

Near infrared light therapy is essentially the same as red light therapy, except infrared energy is invisible, and it penetrates the body deeper than red, reaching deep into soft tissues, muscles, joints, and bone and is where light therapy gets serious. The combination of red light therapy with near infrared energy is being researched for amazing things such as the reversal of traumatic brain injury, stopping and healing the debilitating effects of stroke and heart attack, and the regeneration of damaged nerves and severed spinal cords.

While all of that is unfortunately still years away from common practice, the power of near infrared light therapy has already been FDA approved and is available in-home for the relief of chronic pain. As with red light therapy, near infrared light therapy does not mask the symptoms of pain, it encourages the healing of the actual cause of the pain and so, in many cases, after a course of treatment with infrared light, the pain is gone for good.

1. Red and Infrared light therapy reduces inflammation and blocks or desensitizes the nerves to pain.

Some websites may say that only “specific” wavelengths of light do this, such as 980 nm, but the fact is, the whole visible range of red light through near infrared energy (700nm – 1100 nm) all have the same benefits. The only difference? The longer the wavelength, the deeper it penetrates the body.

If your injury or pain is superficial, red light alone will work fine. If your injury or pain goes deep, you want to use the combination of red and infrared light or infrared alone for the treatment of conditions like these:

12 Major Benefits:

  1. Body pain

  2. Low back pain

  3. Arthritis

  4. Sciatica

  5. Knee pain

  6. Post surgical procedures

  7. Neck pain

  8. Foot pain (plantar fascistis)

  9. Carpal tunnel syndrome

  10. Tendonitis

  11. Fibromyalgia

  12. Sprains, tears or bone breaks

Here’s a great supporting article from the Chiropractic Association:

We are Photons and Photons (Light) Control Everything in the Cell.

Photons switch on the body's processes like an orchestra conductor bringing each individual instrument into the collective sound. At different frequencies, they perform different functions.

Healing Benefits

When you get a cut or scratch on your skin, the cells that are injured somehow signal the surrounding healthy cells to begin reproducing copies of themselves to fill in and mend the opening. When the skin is back to normal, a signal is sent to the cells to tell them to stop reproducing. The photons in light therapy facilitate & accelerate this communication & healing.

Light Energy in Food

Light is present in plants by photosynthesis. When we eat plant foods, the energy of these photons dissipates and becomes distributed over the entire spectrum of electromagnetic frequencies. Photons switch on the body's processes like the conductor in the orchestra.

Wellness Benefits

Light Therapy has been reported, as part of a drug free healthy preventative wellness therapy lifestyle, to temporarily reduce swelling, relieve pain, decrease inflammation, accelerate open wound healing and greatly reduce overall recovery after medical/surgical procedures. Patients have demonstrated increased range of motion, decreased muscle tension and spasm, and improved circulation.

Rejuvenating LED light therapy can be used for temporary pain management such as joint and back pain, sore or torn muscles, sprains, arthritis, post-surgical scars, burns, wounds and more.  Light therapy (phototherapy) is one of the most effective and noninvasive ways to improve overall wellness.

Also used to temporarily relieve Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD effects individuals when the lack of sunlight results in seasonal depression. Phototherapy helps with SAD by resetting the internal biological clock (Circadian rhythms), helping individuals sleep better and regulate their mood. Even companies, such as GE and Philips, have created phototherapeutic products to improve and regulate mood.

Cosmetic Benefits

Light therapy is also a growing treatment for anti-aging and acne. Many individuals have seen a temporary reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, and age spots and is “effective at improving the appearance of the face, neck and chest by reducing the signs of aging, wrinkles and age spots”, says Web M.D. LED phototherapy can be a great way to revitalize skin. For acne, the light removes unwanted bacteria and accelerates healing.

Mid, Near & Far Infrared Light Benefits & What is It?

  • What is it? - As you move away from the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum you encounter the Infrared region. Infrared light is divided into three spectral regions: near, mid- and far-infrared

  • Near Infrared - 880nm - the shortest wavelength without extreme heat or light. Promotes skin renewal, cell health, accelerates wound healing & new tissue growth. This light fuels the cells reducing inflammation, reducing body fat, pain. Used for anti-aging and collagen production to create younger skin.

  • Mid Infrared - longer wavelength, penetrates deeper into soft tissue where inflammation occurs & speeds up healing.

  • Far Infrared - 700nm - raises the core body temperature by 3 degrees allowing bad bacteria and viruses to be destroyed and creates the most detoxifying sweat. Lowers systolic & diastolic blood pressure and aids in weight loss.

The Cellular Science of Light Therapy...

photons-asorbed mito.png

Light Emitting Diode (LED) phototherapy is the application of light energy to tissue to obtain therapeutic benefits.  The energy is used to improve cellular performance.  Phototherapy is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties and has a variety of applications across many medical fields.  Research has shown that phototherapy can: increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, decrease wrinkles, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone and wrinkles, texture and clarity, ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm and arthritis and kill acne bacteria, and much more.

Celluma is unique and quite unlike any other light therapy device available today. Based on NASA research, Celluma delivers blue, red and near-infrared light energy simultaneously to safely treat a wide variety of conditions. Each wavelength is absorbed by different molecules that act as a signaling mechanism for different cellular processes. For example, some reduce inflammation and some kill bacteria, while others enhance localized circulation. FDA approved.

How Does Light Energy Work?

In the same way that plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into plant tissue, high intensity light emitting diodes (LEDs) utilizing specific, proven wavelengths of light can trigger a natural biostimulatory effect in human tissue. Research has shown that phototherapy can increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, kill acne bacteria, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone, texture and clarity, as well as ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm, and arthritis.  Research indicates that cells absorb particles of light (photons) and transform their energy into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the form of energy that cells utilize. The resulting elevation of ATP is then used to power metabolic processes; synthesize DNA, RNA, proteins, enzymes, and other products needed to repair or regenerate cell components; foster mitosis or cell proliferation; and restore homeostasis. Simply put, the LED light source provides compromised cells with added energy so the cells performance is enhanced. For example, fibroblast cells will increase collagen and elastic production in connective tissue.

Specific wavelengths of light energy, when properly absorbed, up-regulates compromised cells. The light (photons) energy is absorbed by photoacceptors in the mitochondria and used to create adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The ATP produced then stimulates various metabolic processes which can result in the repair and regeneration of cell and tissue components. In an article, “Therapeutic Light” -  by Chukuku S. Enwemeka, PT, PhD, FACSM, he wrote “other reported mechanisms of light-induced beneficial effects include modulation of prostaglandin levels, alteration of somatosensory evoked potential and nerve conduction velocity, and hyperemia of treated tissues. The resultant clinical benefits include pain relief in conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, tendonitis, ankle sprain, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction, shoulder and neck pain, arthritis, and post-herpetic neuralgia, as well as tissue repair in cases of diabetic ulcer, venous ulcer, mouth ulcer,  fractures, tendon rupture, ligamentous, tear, torn cartilage, and nerve injury.

How Light Energy is Absorbed by

Dr. Anne Dunev,
Burbank, CA

”Every acne patient we have treated has seen results with the first Celluma acne treatment and signed up for a package, or bought the Celluma to use at home. I have seen other blue light treatments, but nothing has given results like this with the first treatment. Here is what one patient with chronic cystic acne for years emailed, "I loved the light! I love how my skin feels/looks. The redness has subsided a bit and my skin (where it's clear) feels so smooth.” Dietary changes certainly help but take time and it is sometimes hard to get patient compliance, especially with teenagers. The Celluma offers a way for the patient to see real results immediately, and these patients refer others.”

– Dr Costas Papageorgiou MD FACS Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon
New York Dermatology Group

“Celluma is an integral component of NYDG signature treatments like the Triad and Runway Facials which employ the regenerative and lifting effects of multi-layered energy waves and technologies in single sessions. The biophotonic waves of Celluma are implemented as the final step to accelerate recovery by providing the cells with the energy to heal from within. Quite often, I recommend the device as an ongoing maintenance treatment at home to further optimize results”.

– Micky Dymond, three-time American Motocross Association
National Champion

“I have been using my Celluma as a recovery for my legs after each 5-hour shift during the Race Across America! I cover both of my quads and do 30 minutes of light therapy. I then do 30 minutes of light therapy on my hamstrings. By that time I am usually asleep… . I also have been using the Celluma as a warm up for my legs, 30 minutes of light therapy for my quads is a great warm up before getting on the bike and is a very good way get ready to go right into a hard workout. Also, I have started to use the Celluma for my aches and pains on sore shoulder that has been bothering me for many years. I began to use the light therapy to treat it and I am seeing some pain relief right away. I truly have become a fan of the Celluma and use it almost daily. Thanks again for this awesome Celluma!”
